Gestational Surrogacy

New England Fertility prides itself on being one of the largest and most successful gestational surrogacy programs in the Northeast United States. All prospective gestational carriers are given thorough medical and psychological screenings by New England Fertility staff and then expertly matched with patients in order to achieve the best possible outcome, that is, a healthy full-term pregnancy and live birth.

Why Gestational Surrogacy

Over 60 percent of gestational surrogacy cycles result in pregnancy (though the success rate varies depending on the carrier, egg(s), and sperm). Gestational surrogacy is recommended when the female partner is unable to carry a pregnancy (though she may have normal ovarian function and is able to produce normal eggs) or when there is no female partner.

Reasons for gestational surrogacy include:

  • Hysterectomy or other surgery that renders the uterus nonfunctional
  • Pregnancy loss due to an abnormal uterus
  • Severe complications of pregnancy
  • Medical conditions that precludes pregnancy (kidney disease, multiple sclerosis)
  • Gay male couples who desire to have a child (using their sperm and a donated egg)

The Gestational Surrogacy Process

The process of gestational surrogacy involves in vitro fertilization (IVF). The female partner (or egg donor) receives medications to generate multiple eggs. The eggs are then harvested and fertilized with the male partner’s sperm and the healthy embryos are transferred into the uterus of the carrier, who has been treated with hormones.

The success of gestational surrogacy is high and largely depends on the quality of the eggs and the sperm. Gestational surrogates are carefully chosen and screened by New England Fertility, in order to increase the chances of the surrogate becoming pregnant and having a successful pregnancy and live birth.

Legal Issues of Gestational Surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy contracts are legal in the state of Connecticut. New England Fertility’s surrogates are either local (i.e., from Connecticut) or from other surrogate friendly states. This minimizes the risk of any legal complication following the birth of the child. In most cases the intended parents can be named as the parents on the birth certificate thus obviating the need to adopt the child.

Before proceeding, a formal contract is drawn between the gestational carrier and the intended parents. The contract covers all issues related to the treatment and the pregnancy. An escrow account is kept with an attorney to cover the gestational carrier’s costs, which are typically covered by medical insurance.
