Post Retrieval Instructions for Patients

  • The trip home: Someone must accompany you on your trip home after your procedure.
  • Stay home for 24 hours: It is recommended that someone stay with you at home for the first 24 hours.
  • Activity: Moderate activity is allowed, as tolerated.
  • What to avoid: You may feel light headed, dizzy and/or sleepy for up to 24 hours following your procedure. You should therefore not engage in any activity that requires you to be alert and coordinated (i.e. driving). Also avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • What to expect: Minimal abdominal cramping and/or vaginal spotting are common and are not a cause for concern. You may take Tylenol (Regular or Extra Strength) every 4-6 hours for pain/discomfort. Avoid taking Ibuprofen, (Advil or Motrin) and Aspirin or Aspirincontaining products.

A NEFI Nurse will call you later on the day of your procedure to follow up on your recovery.

Call the office immediately for the following

  • Severe pain or cramping
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • A temperature over 100.4F
  • Nausea and vomiting

Note: If you have difficulty contacting a nurse or a Physician, and you feel you signs/symptoms warrant immediate attention, call 911 for assistance.

The Day Following the Retrieval

  • Activity: You may resume normal activity. You may return to work. You should expect some abdominal discomfort and some spotting. Those symptoms will subside gradually.
  • Fertilization report: You will receive a telephone call from one of the Embryologists concerning fertilization of your eggs and the anticipated day of the transfer. You will be asked to indicate where you can be reached by telephone.
  • Timing of your embryo transfer: The embryologist will discuss with you the anticipated day of transfer. The exact time of your transfer will be communicated to you by telephone one (1) day prior to your transfer procedure by the nurse. Embryo transfers are generally done four days following the retrieval but can occur anywhere from day 3 to 5. The decision on the exact timing of the transfer is made on an individual basis in order to maximize the chances of success.
